I know I have been lax about updating, but I am still here and alive.

I have about 150 cranes to fold in the next few days, but I am confident that it will be done.

So I am still way behind where I should be at this late date. My lovely wife has threatened (quite literally) to kill me if I don't manage to meet my 1000 crane goal, so I'm in the process of playing some serious catch up.

In the last 2 days I have folded over 50 cranes, and have the weird fingertip blisters to prove it.

So Andy has called for an update and here it goes. I'm currently working on crane #283 (or there abouts). 1000 cranes in 365 days is about 2.75 cranes a day so I should be working more along the lines of crane #340, so I am seriously behind. Luckily the reason I have been slacking (mainly school stuff, and lots of trips home) are over for a few weeks so I should be able to catch up (or hopefully get myself a little padding) before classes start again.

My wife has been out of town with our camera (and the time/interest to take the pictures and post them), but she will be home sunday night so maybe I can get her to start the pictures again.... Just FYI I'm in the 250's and totally burried in paper.

So the cranes have reached the end of the banister and started to spill over onto other shelves around the house. Starting to get a little crazy. I'm only around 200 (even though I should be closer to 225 if I was on schedule) I can only imagine 5 times as many cranes sitting in our cramped little apartment. I'm completely freaked by the idea of it all, but also a little excited about the cool picture I should be able to take.

Todd (and others) have asked what I plan to do with the cranes once January 1st rolls around. I have had a few ideas about this. My favorite idea was giving them away to friends and family (in, as Andy suggested, a symbolic spreading of the good fortune they are supposed to bring). Traditionally I have heard that I am supposed to take the whole lot of them and set them on fire. I think I will probably do a little of both. Some will be given to people, but since I don't think I have ever talked to 1000 people in my entire life there will probably be enough cranes left over after everyone I know takes their pick to make one hell of a bonfire (and hopefully another awesome picture).

Sometimes I feel the need to see if I can make a crane out of some random paper, see for example the dirty napkin crane from minnesota (#115 at the bottom of the 111-120 pic). This one was made out of a small piece of a chopstick wrapper from Masa in Tallahassee. I sort of love it.

My lovely assistant is out of town for the moment, so she hasn't had the chance to post more pictures. By my calculations I need to have folded 101 & 1/3 cranes by the end of the day today, and I am proud to say that I folded crane #104 last night, so I am momentarily a day or so ahead of the game.

how to make a crane

Some people have asked for some assistance on how to make an origami crane.

1) get a square of paper
2) fold it in 1/2 in all 4 possible ways (Corner to Corner x2, Side to Side x2)
3) unfold and place in front of you with a point facing you. <> not [ ]
4) do a crazy fold that I can't really explain
5) do some other folds that I can't really explain
6) google search through a dozen sites until you find one that can explain the one step you need to do next (cause every site I have seen is great for 1 or 2 steps, but none have been the catch all)
7) repeat 1000 times

Six days into the new year.

I have been slowly building up my small collection of paper cranes. I have also refrained from drinking soda, and eating red meat (my other resolutions for 2006). I have found that full page ads from some of the tech magazines that pile up in my office make for a good 5x5 or 6x6 square of paper, which has led me to fold a few cranes a day while munching my lunch at my desk. I plan on posting the first set of pictures sometime this weekend.

Current count: 10 down - 990 to go (that's 1% done - Woo!)

It has been suggested that I take the time to write little sayings on each of my 1000 paper cranes. I totally love the idea, but know that I would have tons were either song lyrics or that all say the same thing over and over (cause I'm just not that creative). Instead I have descided that I would put a line on each giving them some context to the time in which they were created.... like a year long journal in 1000 lines.
